It’s 1963 in New York City and young Rita is struggling with a black cloud in her mind and a heavy feeling in her heart that simply won’t go away. Her parents and doctors don’t understand why she can’t just be like the other girls her age.
Despite their confusion, her boyfriend Bernie refuses to give up on her. As their relationship deepens, Bernie teaches Rita that self-worth shouldn’t be denied to those who don’t fit into the thin compartments society has built for them. Through his compassion, she begins to rediscover hope and comes to understand that love is not about perfection, but acceptance of who we truly are deep down.
